Vernon Helton

Vernon Helton, 94, of Wheatfield, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2022 with his loving family surrounding him.

Vernon was born September 5, 1927 in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, to Anderson and Laudie (Bailey) Helton. Vernon was a general foreman for the Laborer’s Union Local 81, and was a farmer as well. He took pride in the home that he built and raised his family in, with his first wife, Ruth (Wireman) Helton, who preceded him. Vernon loved his bluegrass jam sessions, and being a member of the Faith Pentecostal Church of God. He was loved by the children of the church, and he would give $1 for a hug to any child of the church who wanted to share. Vernon loved all animals, but he was a horse whisperer, able to get his horses to answer questions and do different tricks. He was a family man, who married his love, Gracie (Shepherd) Helton on November 2, 2013. Vernon was not a man of many words, but he gave a lesson with everything he said.

Vernon is survived by his wife: Gracie, sons: Rick (Rhonda) Helton, Scott (Debbie) Helton, stepson: Mike Meyers, 13 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Vernon was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth, his parents, his daughter: Connie Davis, 3 sisters, and 7 brothers.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at the Boersma Funeral Home, 90 E. Grove St., Wheatfield, Indiana. Services for Vernon will take place on Saturday afternoon at the funeral home at 4:00 p.m. with Bishop Rick Helton officiating. Graveside services will take place at the Wheatfield Cemetery on Monday, June 27, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers memorials are requested for the Faith Pentecostal Church of God Youth Fund.
