John L. Boback

John L. Boback

John L. Boback, 87, of Northbrook, passed away November 28, 2020.  He was the beloved husband for 61 years of Elaine Boback (nee Bernas); loving father of Debbie Cardinal, Renee (Steve) Schnettler, John Boback IV; cherished grandfather of J.P. (Jennifer) Cardinal, Megan Cardinal, Jessica and James Schnettler, great grandfather of Jayden.

John was the son of his beloved parents John and Mary Boback, owners of Boback General Store for 47 years in Tefft, Indiana.  He was born just 3 doors from that store, and graduated from Tefft High School in 1951, and attended DeVry after serving in the Navy.  John cherished his small town upbringing, and stayed connected to those values throughout his whole life, and passed them onto his children. 

He served in the Korean War in the Navy, in the 6th fleet, and was a member of the American Legion.  

He worked at Protection Controls, Inc in Skokie, IL for 57 years and until the week of his passing.  He never retired. 

He loved going out to eat with his family and traveling.  His favorite destinations were Paris, the French Rivera, Fort Meyers Beach, Florida, and Las Vegas.

His favorite past time was sitting outside listening to the radio, smoking cigars with his with his son and son in law, and telling stories of growing up in Tefft and sailing the Mediterranean Sea in the Sixth fleet.

Due to COVID restrictions Funeral Mass will be held at a later date. 

Burial will be private in his home town of Wheatfield, Indiana.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the food pantry of Sorrowful Mother Catholic Church 65 Grace St, Wheatfield, IN 46392.
