Hilda Curry-Gilbert

92 year old, Hilda Curry-Gilbert, of Merrillville, formerly of DeMotte, Valparaiso and Griffith, passed away on August 1, 2022 at her daughter’s home in Merrillville.

Hilda was born to Raymond and Maggie (Hamstra) Boersma on February 28, 1930, on the farm in DeMotte, Indiana. Hilda graduated from Fair Oaks High School and worked as a clerk in retail sales. She married Gene A. Curry on March 15, 1949, in Greensburg, Indiana. Gene preceded her in death on May 7, 2001. She worked for Scheeringa Grocery for 20 years. Hilda also was a farm wife. She later married an old high school sweetheart, Clarence Gilbert on September 14, 2003, who also preceded her on October 31, 2012. She was a member of the DeMotte United Methodist Church for many years. She was a member of the Women’s group at church. She was one of the organizers of the Golden Gems lunch group. Hilda enjoyed spending time with several different craft activities. She did many projects in counted cross stitch, painting ceramics, crocheting, and quilting. Hilda was an avid gardener and enjoyed her many colorful flower beds. She also enjoyed sitting on her front porch and watching the world go by.

Hilda is survived by her children: Margaret (Maurice) Smith, Phyllis White, 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, daughter-in-law: Lola Curry, son-in-law: Sidney Sworden, brother: Andrew Boersma, and many nieces and nephews.

Hilda was preceded in death by her husbands: Gene Curry and Clarence Gilbert, parents, daughter: Susan Sworden, son: Gene ‘Bud’ Curry, grandsons: Scott and Robert Sworden. siblings: Rose Kamminga, Ann King, and William Boersma, and son-in-law: Robert White.

Graveside services for Hilda will take place at the Holland Cemetery, on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Ed van Wiljk officiating.
