Haldon 'Allen' Spriggs

Haldon (Allen) Spriggs 82, of Wheatfield, IN passed away Monday morning September 1, 2014, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

Allen was born in Jasper County, Indiana at home on December 25, 1931. Allen is the son of Lucy (Walker) Spriggs and Otha Spriggs.  He was a resident of Wheatfield, Indiana for 46 years.  On July 15, 1956 he married Mary Alice Justice in Medaryville, IN. He graduated from Rensselaer High School in 1950.  He served his country in the United States Navy from January 1951 to December 1954.  He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict on the USS Ohare-DD889 and the USS Gyatt-DD712. While serving in the Navy he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.  He was honorably discharged as a Fire Control Technician 3. After returning home he worked as a meat cutter for the A&P Store in Rensselaer & Indianapolis, Indiana.  He worked for 25 years for the Teamsters Local 142 before retiring.  After retiring he worked as a Security Guard for Georgia Pacific and NIPSCO in Wheatfield, IN.  He has been a member of the American Legion Post 406 in Wheatfield for 29 years.  He enjoyed family, gardening, traveling and the outdoors.

Allen is survived by his loving family, wife: Mary Alice Spriggs, 5 daughters: Maureen (Jimmy) Fortner, Kathy Bounds, Heather (Charles) Jones, Beth (Rick) Winemiller, Chelsea (James) Miller, 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, sisters: Ann Pluth & Eva Hammond.

Allen was preceded in death by his parents: Otha & Lucy Spriggs, 2 brothers: Albert & Richard, and 5 sisters: Evelyn, Iris, Charlotte, Louise, & Letty, and grandson Ethan James Miller.

Friends are invited to visit with the family on Friday, September 5, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Boersma Funeral Home, 90 East Grove St., Wheatfield, Indiana. Services for Allen will take place at 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Don Gear officiating. Internment will follow in the Smith Cemetery in Barkley Township, Rensselaer, Indiana. 

Family requests that memorials be made to the family for a specific memorial bench in his honor.
