Charles 'Chuck' De Moss

65 year old Charles 'Chuck' DeMoss, of Wheatfield, passed away on April 29, 2023.

Chuck was born on September 1, 1957, the son of: John 'Jack' and Naomi (Conley) DeMoss. He married the love of his life, Colleen Richie on April 12, 1980, at the Christian Church of Medaryville, Indiana.  Chuck was a member of the Laborer's Local #41 for 45 years. Chuck understood and strongly believed in union membership. He had an unwavering belief in the value that Unions bring to working class Americans. Along with that came an appreciation for those who mentored him as a laborer and Chuck particularly, enjoyed sharing his knowledge and experience with Local #41 apprentices in an effort to mentor them. He was honored to pass on his belief of being Union Strong to his son, Casey, who followed in his footsteps.  If you knew Chuck you know his passion extended beyond his profession to his faith and family.  As a member of Calvary Assembly of God, DeMotte, Indiana, Chuck has served as a deacon and from spring through autumn could be seen attending to the church grounds. He saw this as his way of serving His Lord and Savior. An avid golfer he enjoyed warm summer days on the fairways and greens with his siblings and friends.  He especially enjoyed time on the links with his Casey and Tasha. His most frequent golf buddy being his brother Jim.  Beyond golf Chuck was enthusiastic about baseball, basketball and football. Not just about the sports themselves but about promoting youth sports and the young people who play these sports. Having participated in sports in his younger days Chuck instilled in his children and grandchildren a love for sports.  Just as he saw value in union membership, he saw value in sporting activities especially team sports. Inheriting natural athletic skill from their father, his children took up his love of sports.  This opened the door for Chuck to find a great source of joy by coaching them in their respective sports. In 2005, God blessed Chuck by making him papaw to his first grandson, Ethan. Becoming papaw fueled his passion to pass on his love of sports to the next generation. And so it was, as soon as Ethan could hold a ball, a bat, a golf club, papaw was at the helm to mentor him.  His pleasure as papaw was doubled in 2016, when Casey and his wife Stephanie gave him another grandson, Jack. Over the years Chuck was privileged to help teach and provide guidance to many other young boys as he joyfully invested himself by coaching many of Ethan's baseball teams.  A couple of his proudest accomplishments in coaching was once with his son and again with Ethan he was part of a coaching staff that took their teams to state level championships.  Chuck was preparing to continue his legacy by helping his son, Casey, coach his grandson Jack's baseball team this summer. Chuck's joy as papaw was recently doubled, again, as he acquired 2 more grandsons, Brian Jr. and Brandon Bolin, in the marriage of his daughter, Tasha, to Brian Bolin. Chuck was very proud of his family each one with their own list of accomplishments. Once Chuck retired in 2009, he began a new adventure as distributor for Hoosier Basketball Magazine. During the football season Chuck could be found any Friday night at a high school football game somewhere in the region. From the press box he served as correspondent to Lakeshore Public Radio Station for their Friday night radio program covering high school football in the region. He had a deep appreciation for both of these programs as a way of helping talented athletes get noticed in hopes of helping them gain a scholarship to advance their education to the college level.  In addition, Chuck also found time to volunteer at golf outings for the Special Olympics, garden and travel with his wife.

Chuck is survived by his loving family, wife, Colleen, children: Casey (Stephanie) DeMoss, Tasha (Brian) Bolin, grandchildren: Ethan Brinsfield, Jack DeMoss, Brian Bolin Jr., Brandon Bolin, mother: Naomi DeMoss, siblings: Steven (Gina) DeMoss, Larry (Teresa) DeMoss, Kathryn Rodriguez, Jim (Pam) DeMoss, Lila (Tom) Fritz, Marcus (Sharon) DeMoss, and Diane Beaver.
